We are in the World Bank Apps for Development Gallery!

Exciting stuff, the MDGTagger was submitted to the World Bank competition today, and we are now showcased on the Application Gallery. Some really interesting uses of the WB data sets on there, great to see the creativity. Why not have a look for yourself...

Launched a new MDGTagger info website

The MDGTagger team have been busy beavering away and proudly launch the MDGTagger website.

This is now the main shop window or marketing site for the MDGTagger project. It will also serve as the basis for more detailed usage instructions, installation FAQs, that sort of thing. All very exciting and hopefully will help draw in even more people to create global network of MDGTaggers!

A word about globalisation

A really nice aspect of the whole MDGTagger project is that it provides a mechanism for global MDG professionals to find each other and connect over topics of common interest, regardless of language. By the magic of a consistent hastag taxonomy, we can start to bring people together whether they speak/write English, Spanish, Swahili, Portuguese, etc, etc.  So that's wonderful!  It does of course also mean that the MDGTagger team needs to provide a level of support in all those languages too.  A this stage in the game the only way to do that is via the  magic of Machine Translation.  So thanks very much Googl Translate. Srlsly.    As you are probably aware, machine translation, is awesome, but far from perfect, so if you happen to be a native Kiswahili speaker, say,  and you spot that we have got a dodgy translation of something, please do let us know via the blog comments here
cheers

UPDATE: well, seeing as I was relying on Google to translate everything anyway ( they did Swahili, freetranslation.com did not) I thought I'd see what else was available. A nice tool that is provided is the embedded web page translator (http://translate.google.com/translate_tools) . Basically, rather than me having to go through and create different language versions of all my pages, just add the translation widget and let users choose for themselves. Magic! lets see how we get on.

MDGTagger now integrates with Digg

We just added the 'Digg it ' to MDGTagger for all current languages, English, Espanol and Kiwahili!

New logo and colour scheme

We've rolled out the new branding, based around a brushed aluminium texture with a burnt orange sort of a colour.  Pretty simple, just the name and two fonts.  Check it out...

Thanks Google Translate :-)

MDGTagger está ahora disponible en español

The Spanish language version of the MDGTagger bookmarklet is now online.  This enables Spanish speakers to have quick access to the MDG tags to help broadcast their news. In addition to the Spanish translation, the MDGTagger_ES also incorporates the #ODM hashtag, as this is commonly used by Spanish speakers.  Next step is to incorporate #ODM tags in to MDGTaggerHQ  so that the global community ball starts rolling....

Bright future for Kenya

The recent trip to Kenya this Christmas was amazing.  Kenya is an extraordinary country with  many wonderful aspects to it.   Sadly, there are always security concerns hanging over everything with difficulties of corruption etc everywhere.  So while the story of the Hague 6 was somewhat depressing, I was really inspired by the trip.  The inspiration of course, comes form the ordinary Kenyans, busy going about their lives. For me a nice illustration of Kenya was while sitting in an internet cafe working on the MDGTagger.  There I was, chipping away at finding a translation for '8.1 Net ODA, total and to the least developed countries, as percentage of OECD/DAC donors; gross national income' while next to me, a young Kenyan guy was studying Integrated Circuit Design for Graphics processors.  IMHO It's people like that that will ultimately ensure the quality of life improves for Kenya.
